They don’t build computers like they used to. No, seriously, they really don’t. Thick beige plastic. A solid steel chassis. The weight of a fully loaded suitcase. Vintage computers were serious business. There was a sea of competition with a ton of companies like Texas Instruments, IBM and Apple vying for market share. Buying a computer back then was a big deal and for most it was a magical, groundbreaking experience that would define their computing experience for years to come.
Today, the world of computing has changed drastically from what it once was. You can play amazingly high quality games right on your smartphone or tablet. Buying a new computer happens at the click of a button and prices (much like the weight) have been reduced significantly. Today computer ownership is ubiquitous whether you like it or not.
The problem with computers today is that they have been commoditized to the point of a toaster or a curling iron. Even high-end custom PCs can still have a cheap feel to them. All of the low-level functions of modern computer components are obfuscated behind an ocean of silicon. The days of being able to repair most components at home are gone. If something breaks, you toss it out and buy a new one (or put it in the oven).
Fear not, because the world of vintage computers is as strong as ever today and there’s a ton of enthusiasts who still love old hardware. The magic of learning exactly how old systems work. The allure of obscure components. The stories that products of the past hold. I want to explore some excellent places, projects and people that keep the history of computing alive and well. Let’s take a look.
(YouTube Channels)
CuriousMarc tops this list for his sheer variety of content and highly thorough engineering detail in every video. This guy is amazing. Marc Verdiell’s credentials in the world of computing are prestigious. He holds a PhD in Optoelectronics, has been a leading member at numerous Bay Area startups and can regularly be seen working on mainframes at the Computer History Museum. You can read even more about his incredible credentials on LinkedIn.
Marc’s YouTube channel has a ton of content. He makes videos covering a wide variety of historically significant computer hardware. He even has an entire series on restoring the guidance computer from the Apollo. How cool is that? There is a great “trailer” for some of Marc’s work available from Gizmodo on YouTube that showcases how he works and his love for computer history. You can also check out his website to learn more about his vision and pickup some awesome merchandise too.
Lazy Game Reviews (LGR) is another great channel centered around vintage gaming with a ton of legendary computing setups sprinkled in. This channel showcases a ton of very well produced content that includes retro game reviews, how-to guides and even reviews of some newer products modeled to look like old ones (like this case from Checkmate).
Unlike Marc Verdiell who straps you to an engineering overload rocket going 12,000 Kph, Clint from LGR takes you on a pleasant leisurely ride down memory lane. The videos on LGR make you long for the days of playing Maniac Mansion on the Commodore 64 or Pong on the Intellivision. It is a magical experience watching these systems that were once the centerpieces of family households being restored to their original glory.
(Books)
Home Computers: 100 Icons that Defined a Digital Generation (The MIT Press)
amazon.comamazon.comHome Computers is a wonderful text containing high-quality prints and information about many popular vintage machines. This rests in the “coffee table” category of books because its not really something you pickup and read cover-to-cover. This is a book for admiring the beautiful design of these machines with brief glimpses into the minds that created them.
Each section has a quick history of the machine, some of the key events that happened throughout its lifetime and basic specifications. The highlights here are the glamour shots of each machine.
Core Memory: A Visual Survey of Vintage Computers
amazon.comamazon.comKeeping with the theme of “coffee table” books, Core Memory is another incredible compendium of vintage photos and text. This book focuses less on home computing and more on the important machines of history whether meant for the home or business.
Although both of these books are not novels chronicling the rise and fall of various technology companies throughout time, they are just as important. These volumes showcase the striking beauty and feats of design and engineering inherent in many historic machines. Sure, some may be drab beige boxes that were only produced as a soulless cash grab, but others are true masterpieces whose silhouette shows how much mind, heart and soul went into developing them.
